Introduction

I am Bridget Sitkoff, the Lower School Technology Specialist at a private K-12 school in Massachusetts.  This is my second year teaching as well as my second year in the TIE program at Lesley University.

Although many things feel so much easier this year (knowing everyone’s name, for starters), I still have so much to learn. I have several roles in my position at the Lower School – I teach a weekly computer course for grades 3, 4, and 5. I work in classrooms with teachers to bring technology into their classrooms. I run our two computer labs and maintain our laptop carts and support teachers and kids in their use of technology. I also serve as the Lower School representative on school wide technology committees. Every day is a little different, and I’m constantly challenged to learn and grow alongside my students.

This course in assessment comes at a good time for me. Our school provides only written comments (no letter grades) before grade 9, and technology is not a reported subject. Because of this, I am not asked to perform formal assessment as part of my job. However, I am starting to realize that I need to be constantly assessing my students – to find out what they know, what they need to know, and whether I am effectively teaching them. Although I don’t have any prior coursework in assessment, I am excited to learn the theory that goes with the practice of assessment.
